1 Dec 2017 They made her feel safe in ways she never quite felt in her parents' homes, at boarding school, or out in the topsy-turvy London of the 1960s.

Cart Jenny Diski's Sixties were not my Sixties (though I agree with her about the music). It all depended on having a rosy view of human nature that, so far, has been achieved only by a few saints. Jenny Diski, who was 13 in 1960 and thus entered adolescence at the start of the age, has not written such a history. Instead, she has written in effect a short commentary in which she looks back at some of the strands running through the age, from today's vantage point. Jenny Diski lived through all these and more, and now takes a wry and engaging look back at the contradictions inherent in an era of growing individualism, permissiveness and liberation. She starts by describing her favourite black crepe Biba dress, and leads on to seeing how the legacy of the free-thinking sixties may have influenced the greed and self-interest of the eighties.
